Rail passengers that need step-free access at Derby station will need to use the subway next month whilst work is carried out on the lifts.
Network Rail are funding and completing a project which will see the lifts at both the main entrance and Pride Park entrance renewed.
The work will be carried out in two phases so that they are not out of action at the same time, reducing the impact on passengers.
The main entrance lifts will be refurbished first, with work being carried out from Tuesday, 1 September until the end of November.
The work at Derby station on the Pride Park entrance lifts will then be completed from Monday, 4 January to the beginning of April next year.
Gary Walsh, Route Director for Network Rail's East Midlands Route, said: “We know how annoying it is when lifts break down – so we're carrying out this work to make them much more reliable.
“We're sorry for any inconvenience, but this work is vital to make the station better for the future.”
Free taxis will be available to take people to the main entrance from the Pride Park side of the station.
Neil Grabham, Customer Services Director at East Midlands Railway, said: “We have been working hard to put in place measures to help passengers navigate our station while this essential work takes place. These include more staff on hand to help, lots of clear signage and free taxis round from the Pride Park entrance.
“Even so, we would recommend that all passengers leave extra time to make journeys and to check our website for updates. We'd like to thank station users for their patience whilst this work takes place.”

Lift improvements at Derby station. Great to see Network Rail doing more improvements during the Coronavirus restrictions.
Should of done that before when Derby railway station has been modernised.
From what I heard, the lifts were perfectly fine but only after the modernisation project, they started breaking down. I got trapped in it once, and the time before, the doors opened and the lift fell down about a foot so it wasn’t safe to board. even after when they fixed it, if you went inside, you could hear it grinding and clunking. The more people that was inside, the more you could hear it.
I’m guessing Network Rail decided to do it all of a sudden as they kept breaking down more often. From what one EMR gate staff said, the lifts are quite old (1990-ish)
I feel sorry for the EMR trolley hosts, as they would have to use the subway+ other lifts to get to platform 5 and 6, while the lifts are out of use. that being said I’m surprised that NR when they did the modernisation project that they extend the subway to platform 6/7.
