Following shortlisting and judging, the winners of the and Our Future Derby's competition have been chosen.

Despite running during lockdown restrictions, children from both primary and secondary schools across Derby entered the competition.

The key criteria for the design were to be environmentally friendly, also key for trains running across the UK now and in the future.

After viewing all the designs from the over 20 schools and shortlisting down to 14 individual drawings, 28 Engineers and Project Managers across Porterbrook decided which they felt were the top three, which are:

  1. Ravensdale Infant School's Year 2 Logan G – winning a £50 Amazon Voucher and £250 towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) equipment at his school
  2. St Albans Catholic Primary School's Year 4 Jamie D – winning a £30 Amazon Voucher and £150 towards STEM equipment
  3. Joint third goes to Oakwood Junior School's Year 6s Deema V and Tristan D – each winning a £20 Amazon Voucher and £150 towards STEM equipment

CEO of Porterbrook Mary Grant said: “Porterbrook is passionate about helping young people realise their full potential in STEM subjects, so we were delighted to sponsor this competition. There were some brilliant ideas on how Green Trains could transform railway journeys and some fantastic submissions. It was very difficult to award the prizes, so I congratulate Logan, Jamie, Deema and Tristan on making the top three! Their classmates and schools should be very proud of them.”

  • Wonderful drawings from the school children. Hope they too would find a job in the railway industry and to make, design and manufacture brand new trains for the UK. Either high speed (HS2/HS3), electric commuter (metro/suburban). And electric & Bi-mode intercity and regional trains in the UK.
