After a collection at South Shields Transport Interchange, generous donations for a local food bank have officially been handed over.
The food bank collection point at the interchange ran from July 6th-10th to help people who are struggling during the Covid-19 crisis.
The food bank was run by Nexus, the public body who owns and manages Metro.
All the items which were donated were given to the South Shields based Hospitality and Hope food bank.
The collection tub overflowed with donations. It included items such as long-life milk, tinned fish, pasta, rice, along with other canned food items and some toiletries.
Along with the successful food bank, track renewals contractor, Redstone Projects, chipped in with a massively generous donation of £500.
Customer Services Director at Nexus, Huw Lewis, said: “Metro is at the heart of the local community, making it an ideal location for food bank collection points.
“We saw an amazing response from people in South Tyneside and we have collected bag after bag of food for those most in need across the borough. This will aid people in the most deprived areas , many of who are struggling even more due to the devastating effects of the coronavirus pandemic.”
