Stadler has announced that it is to deliver four hybrid tram-trains for use on Hungarian Railways.
Hungarian operator MÁV-START Zrt. has exercised the option in the original contract for four additional bi-mode tram-trains from the CITYLINK family.
The original contract for eight tram-trains was signed in 2017 to serve the first tram-train system in Hungary between Szeged and Hódmezővásárhely.
The first eight units are expected to enter service by Autumn 2021, while the optional four units by the summer of 2022.
The original eight tram-trains will be able to serve a timetable with a service every 20 minutes, while the other four vehicles will reduce this frequency to just 15 minutes.
The new tram-trains will operate in electric mode on the network in Szeged and Hódmezővásárhely, and on diesel mode on the mainline that connects the cities.

It’s basically the same design or identical to the Sheffield Supertram Class 399 and TfW Class 398 Citylink Tram-Train vehicles. With the TfW Class 398 Citylink stocks to be built and to enter service from around 2022/23.
