Work on Transport for London construction projects has resumed, with more restarting in the coming weeks, in line with the government's lockdown easing for those who cant work from home.
Construction at around 300 Transport for London sites was stopped in late March to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.
Since then, the design and prep work has continued, with many staff and contractors working from home.
During the upcoming weeks, site preparation to follow social distancing will safely begin in a phased manner.
The projects include major improvements for tube and rail, including the Northern Line extension to Battersea, the Bank Station upgrade and the extension of London Underground to a new housing development at Barking Riverside.
TfL has introduced extensive physical changes to worksites. These include:
- staggered shifts and breaks
- clear signage for social distancing
- additional staff welfare areas
- additional hand-washing facilities
- reconfigured canteens
Heidi Alexander, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said: “It's really positive that work can now safely resume on key transport infrastructure projects, which will help to kickstart London's economic recovery. It's vital that construction workers make journeys to sites on foot or by bike if at all possible in order to keep services safe for those who really need it. If workers have to travel on public transport, I'm pleased that our plans for staggered shifts will help them avoid the busiest times.”
Stuart Harvey, Director of Major Projects, said: “Our number one priority is always the safety of staff on our sites as well as the surrounding communities. We have carefully developed our plans and adapted our worksites by working closely with our supply chain. It is a positive step that work can safely recommence on upgrades and key transport infrastructure projects that are so vital for the capital. We will continue to keep activity at all sites under review and ensure we continuously evaluate and improve our approach with safety at the forefront of all that we do.”
Transport for London is looking into options to allow the construction sector to privately hire riverboats and transport workers to site accessible from the river.

The Northern Line extension programme is still continuing despite the Coronavirus outbreak. But at least it’s not been delayed and over budget than Crossrail (Elizabeth Line) which it is. And should of opened in December last year. But it’s likely to open in late 2021.
