Network Rail has completed an upgrade to the railway between Fareham and Eastleigh to provide a more reliable railway for passengers.
Between Saturday 23rd and Saturday 30th May, just under a mile of track was replaced by engineers. The team of engineers also carried out general maintenance on the points and other rails.
The line reopened after a successful closure on Saturday 30th May 2020.
A ‘New Track Construction' train was used to quickly lay sleepers as well as aligning and securing the rails into place.
Once the track and sleepers were laid, a tamper pushes the ballast into place and positions the track, so it is straight and level.
Mark Killick, Network Rail Wessex route director said: “We've now completed the rail upgrade on the Eastleigh to Fareham line which will provide a more reliable railway and better journeys for passengers.
“I'd like to thank those unable to work from home for their patience during the works and also praise our railway heroes who adopted new practices and worked tirelessly to hand back the railway on time.”
