Didcot Railway Centre (DRC) has announced that their doors will be open to the public from Saturday 4th of July 2020.
Anyone wishing to visit DRC, home to the Great Western Society and their extensive collections of Great Western Railway engines and artefacts, will need to pre-book an Open-Air Discovery Day ticket.
DRC are taking advantage of their large outdoor areas, and spacious 1932-built engine shed to allow social distancing and other safety measures to be met.
Unfortunately, some attractions and exhibitions will not be open, and these will be:
- Science of Railways Carriages
- Air Raid Shelter
- Signalling Centre
- Takeaway only service at Refreshments Room – outdoor picnic tables and benches can be found around the 21-acre site.
- No trains running – each Open-Air Discovery Day ticket allows you to return at a later date on a Steam Day.
Despite this, there is still plenty to see at DRC:
- Large Fleet of Great Western Railway locomotives – from large express passenger engine 6000 ‘King' Class No.6023 “King Edward II” to small tank No.1338, built by the Cardiff Railway for working the docks
- Gift shop and Museum – open but with controlled access
Only a limited number of Open-Air Discovery Day tickets will be available, which are expected to be popular, with anyone wishing to visit advised to book sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.
