Cycle facilities at Thameslink stations to be improved

Improvements to cycle storage at Thameslink stations are on track after being put on hold due to the coronavirus crisis.

station has received almost £81,000 of improvements to its 2 cycle parking areas. Racks under the station entrance stairs accommodated 35 bikes. These have now been removed and replaced with a two-tier rack to accommodate up to 60 bikes.

More than £17,000 was spent at to improve facilities. The station now has a smart cycle shelter, with increase storage space for 26 bikes, CCTV, a dropped kerb, line markings and signage.

At , over £135,000 has been spent on new secure cycle parking. On the London-bound station, GTR has increased security by installing a compound and improvements to lighting and CCTV.

is another station that is expected to see its work completed by the end of June. £190,000 of improvements are being made, including a new cycle hub with storage for up 100 bikes, CCTV, maintenance and a bike detection system.

GTR's Senior Project Manager Paul Best said: “We're delighted that these projects are nearing completion and we hope the improvements will encourage more rail users to use pedal power as part of their journey.”

Cycling UK Bedfordshire Chairman Steve Clark also welcomed the improvements when the schemes were announced earlier in the year. He said: “Anything that makes it easier for cyclists to link up with rail and bus services is to be applauded.”
