The Mid Suffolk Light Railway (MSLR or ‘Middy’) have released an update regarding COVID-19 and recent work on rolling stock and infrastructure.

With the Middy’s museum, rolling stock and other areas along the line mostly being small spaces, the railway cannot see any way the MSLR can meet social distancing measures without major changes (expensive and time-consuming) and removing the unique experience the railway offers.

This means the railway currently has no plans to reopen at the moment, but will continue to review the situation as advice and guidance are updated.

Locomotives and Carriages

Restoration of Hudswell Clarke No.1604 is progressing well, with the rolling chassis complete with brake gear and motion attached. At Mervyn Mayes, the firebox has recently passed examinations following repairs.

Extensive repairs to the wood panelling are continuing on Carriage No.13, which is hoped to be completed by the end of June 2020.

Facility Repairs and Maintenance

Renovation and repairs have been made to the shop, tea room and The Kitchener Arms bar coach, with a few finishing touches needed before the work is completed. Construction of a footbridge over a brook for public access will begin shortly. Extension work on building the track has been paused for now.

Upgrades will be made to the railway’s website, including the addition of a new “Historical” page.

Supporting the Mid Suffolk Light Railway

Currently, the railway recommends anyone wishing to support them to donate to the either their 1604 Restoration Project or Track Extension Project. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated.
