West Coast main line improvement work taking place this May

Rail passengers who are wanting to use London Euston station for trains to the Midlands, North West and Scotland are being reminded to check before travelling, with major railway upgrades planned for May weekends.

The work set to take place includes a major junction near being replaced as well as track improvement at Wembley, Wolverhampton and Warrington.

Additionally, a 1960s railway flyover will be removed at .

Essential upgrades to the WCML will take place on:

  • Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 May
  • VE Day bank holiday weekend – Friday 8 to Sunday 10 May
  • Spring bank holiday weekend – Saturday 23 to Monday 25 May

The public are also reminded about the guidelines on essential travel through May.

What did the officials say?

Tim Shoveller, managing director for 's North West & Central region, said:

“The schemes we are carrying out over the weekends in May are all must-do work. We have planned it so as to minimise disruption to freight and those who do need to travel. It will help to ensure the railway is at its best when Britain emerges from this coronavirus pandemic.

“Our mission-critical frontline colleagues, including railway upgrade engineers, signallers, maintenance, control room and operations staff, are Britain's hidden heroes, helping to keep Britain connected in this time of need. And I'm proud of them.”

  • Not just the WCML. But also the ECML including a new underpass that is still under construction at Werrington Junction, Peterborough.

  • The railway is near our house so the will be working all nit during the May Bank holidays with lots of noise. Think about us also. We are putting up with the noise and disruption. We are stuck indoors and wont be able to sleep. We are heroes too.
