The is asking members of the public to share their stories and photos of the line during the COVID-19 outbreak.

While some of us are at home with little to do, the NYMR is asking for people to send them their memories of the heritage line.

Set in one of the UK's most beautiful countryside areas, the NYMR preserved railway opened in 1973 and has been operating passenger trains ever since.

Volunteers spend thousands of hours each year restoring infrastructure and rolling stock, with tens of thousands of passengers taking trips between Pickering and Grosmont, with some trains running to Whitby. Every train rode, and hour volunteered, creates many memories.

If you have a memory to share, message the NYMR either on Facebook or Twitter, or share them using #LocalHistory20

Head of Marketing at North Yorkshire Moors Railway Laura Strangeway said “Amongst all the doom and gloom that's dominating the headlines at the moment, we thought it would be nice to reminisce on happier times and come together as a community, to share our experiences of this incredible part of the world. It's not called God's own county for nothing! There's a rich and vibrant history in the area and we'd love to hear everyone's stories, see their old photos and journey back in time with them. Especially at the moment, whilst so many people are confined to their homes, it's a nice way to bring the outside in.

Laura continued “Anyone who has a story or memory they'd like to share with us, can just send a message to one of our social media channels and we'll keep pushing their stories out, with #localhistory20 for others to read, experience, and enjoy.”

  • My memories of steam train rides was on the Lancashire railway and was very nice experience and having a holiday up in Scotland and going up on the steam ride up the Jacobite line up to malaig beautiful scenery 😁👍

  • I like the idea of sharing memories of the NYMR… I too have visited/seen the NYMR ‘in-person’ myself a few times, Rode this Terrific Heritage Railway line at least 3 times in-between.

I once filmed one of the steam loco-hauled passenger trains Departing North of Pickering – During A Previous visit to the NYMR back in September 2015, the day after my 24th Birthday (with mi dad and a friend of ours).

In-fact I still have it with me to this day (4 and a half years on)… So as much as I’d like to share it, I don’t know how to yet, However I shall someday.

Furthermore, I’m completely sure the NYMR still has A Future Ahead.
