Plans for the last part of the Dawlish Sea Wall project have been released by Network Rail showing how both the sea wall and railway have been incorporated together to protect this vital transport link.
Network Rail has partnered with Arup to produce the plans for the £80 million project, which will be submitted to Teignbridge District Council in June 2020.
Just under 2000 letters outlining the proposed work have been sent to local residents, in preparation for discussions with the public.
The planned sea wall has undergone computer simulations to test its effectiveness, especially with more extreme weather and rising sea levels causing a great to threat to the line and surrounding around.
The submitted design was found to be best suited for Dawlish. With millions of pounds of the budget already spent in the local area, the project supports the Dawlish area both in the short and long-term.
The 415-metre long site under the proposed plan will feature a new higher sea wall along with a promenade and revised station layout, allowing people to enjoy the popular summer destinations from a safe location. Work to the Grade II listed station makes it easier for passengers, including wheelchair users or people with limited mobility to access the beach.
Network Rail's Western Route Director Mike Gallop said “The Department for Transport and Network Rail have been working tirelessly to determine what needs to be done in order to protect this vital transport artery for Devon and Cornwall, in a way that works for Dawlish. Completing the Government's £80m investment will protect the railway and improve facilities for the residents of Dawlish and visitors to the town for generations to come. We've already made great progress on the first section the Dawlish sea wall at Marine Parade and would like to thank the local community and passengers for their patience as the work continues.
Mike continued “With almost £5m already being spent locally during our works at Marine Parade, we are committed to continuing to spend as much as we can with local suppliers, accommodation providers and other community businesses as we deliver the remainder of this vital project.”

Good to see that £80million is being spent on improving, upgrading and of course protecting the railway line, railway station and the Devon seaside town. This is what Dawlish needs.
Dawlish does need a new sea wall. And I think it’s great to see the money being spent on protecting not just the Devon seaside town but also the railway line and the station next to the sea.
