Rail engineers worked over the May Bank Holiday weekend to complete important rail upgrades in Kent, Sussex and Wessex.
Engineers were supported by a fleet of engineering trains, road-rail vehicles and other machinery.
The programme of work on the Southern Region will help deliver a more reliable railway with improved facilities for passengers.
John Halsall, managing director for Network Rail Southern region, said “I would like to thank all of our staff who worked tirelessly over the late bank holiday. I'm also delighted that there has been no overrunning engineering works, meaning lines were ready for passengers who needed to travel this morning. We need to continue with these upgrades as they are critical to keeping people and freight supplies moving and once again ask passengers to only travel if absolutely necessary.”
The work carried out over the weekend included:
- Tunnel maintenance at Oxted, Edenbridge and Riddlesdown
- Points upgrades at Lingfield and Woldingham
- Maintenance between Ashford and Rye / Hastings
- Points upgrades at Brixton Junction
- Track renewal between Eastleigh and Fareham
Network Rail is continuing with engineering work if it is required to maintain an operational railway.

Minor winge re the relaying at Oxted: Two bridges that literally split the community in half were closed for 3 days, yet no work was carried out on Saturday 23, the works train standing unattended in platform 2 all day. Local residents value their railway and usually put up with the inconvenience associated with engineering work, but patience wore a little thin last Saturday. As usual the great British public took matters into their own hands and removed some of the barriers & bridge closure signs to maintain access. Please note, NR
