The British Transport Police has announced that a woman has received a £660 fine at court after being found guilty of breaching the new Coronavirus restrictions.
This is the first arrest of its kind in the country.
Marie Dinou, 41, and of Oak Tree Close, York, appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates Court on Monday 30th March 2020.
Marie received a £660 fine for failing to provide a reason for travel to the police and failed to comply with the requirements under the Coronavirus Act 2020.
She was also ordered to pay a £66 victim surcharge and £85 in costs.
On Saturday 28th March at around 8 am, officers at Newcastle Central station received a report from rail staff of a woman loitering between platforms.
They approached Marie and engaged with her in an attempt to understand her reasons for essential travel, but following several more attempts by officers to explain and encourage she refused to speak to officers.
Having explored all options, Dinou was arrested on suspicion of breaching the restrictions imposed under the new Coronavirus Act 2020.
What did the officials say?
Assistant Chief Constable Sean O'Callaghan said:
“Enforcement of any sort under the new regulations really is a last resort, especially arrest.
“In this case, officers tried their upmost best to engage with Dinou. I can assure you we would much rather not have to take such action.”
“We strongly urge the public to do the right thing and help us save lives by staying at home and slowing the spread of the virus.

Unfortunately whilst I admire the good work done by the BTP on arresting and prosecuting this stupid woman I would imagine that the bleeding hearts do gooders will have her fine reduced or overturned completely, all to common in this day and age where nobody is responsible for their own actions, no surprise the police prefer to look the other way.
As the fines start at £60, I’m guessing that this woman had been doing this several times before?
