The East Somerset Railway (ESR) has announced that Great Western Railway (GWR) 5205 Class No.5239 “Goliath” has returned to the Dartmouth Steam Railway (DSR), the owners and home line of 5239.

Before being loaded up on a lorry for transporting back to the DSR on Tuesday 31th of March, 5239 had undergone an overhaul at the ESR Cranmore Locomotive Workshop to running order.

Arriving on Wednesday 18th of October 2017, the team at Cranmore spent three years to the day almost overhauling “Goliath”, from arrival to carrying out test runs.

This work should see 5239 in steam for the next ten years.

With “Goliath” due to be completed and return to traffic, the DSR and ESR made a deal which will see the DSR's newly acquired GWR 5101 Class No.4110 undergo restoration at the ESR's Cranmore Workshop.

On completion, 4110 will remain at the ESR for three years to haul passenger trains.
