The Churchward County Trust has confirmed that Computed Aided Design (CAD) work on the cylinders for their new build Great Western Railway (GWR) Churchward 3800 ‘County' Class No.3840 “County of Montgomery” locomotive has been finished.
Quotes have been obtained, and the order is ready to be placed once lockdown restrictions have been lifted from the three firms which will see both 18-inch diameter by 30-inch stroke internal steam pipe cylinders go from CAD drawings to the finished blocks ready for fitting.
The companies are:
- Premier Patterns – for producing the two polystyrene patterns
- Scunthorpe-based foundry – for casting both blocks
- Roach Precision – for machining the blocks (Roach will wait until the cylinders are ready before completing machining work on the front frame extensions. These will be completed together to ensure the blocks and frame line up perfectly.)

Main frame assembly will start at the rear of the engine's frame when this task begins at Tyseley Locomotive Works, with the cylinder blocks playing a vital part in forming the front end of 3840 County of Montgomery.
