Bulleid Carriage No.1456, one of three vehicles being restored by the Canadian Pacific Project, has entered service on the Mid Hants Railway (The Watercress Line).
This is a big milestone for the Project, and the team have done a fantastic job of restoring this unique carriage.
Passed into service in early March, with some minor work still outstanding, 1456 carried many passengers during the recent visit of “Flying Scotsman” to reopen a part of the Mid Hants Railway.
After the event, 1456 is now back in the workshop to have a few tasks completed, the main ones being commissioning of the toilet and fitting both baggage racks and tables.
What did the officials say?
One of the coordinators for the project, Ali Steele, commented saying,
“The work on this historic vehicle has been supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, along with the Arts Council via their Preservation of Industrial and Scientific Material (PRISM) Fund, who provided funding specifically for the underframe and bogies. With this valuable funding, and the hard work of the paid and voluntary members of carriage workshop staff, the Watercress Line has a fantastic addition to the carriage fleet.”
“The work of our volunteers has been incredible. From getting noisy with a needle gun when cleaning up the underframe, to installing the electrical system, we simply couldn’t have done it without them. A real team effort, and I’m very proud to be part of that team.”

I must say, The Mid-Hants Railway/Watercress Line really are doing A Good Job Restoring and Preserving this Remarkable Part of the UK Preservation Movement,
Especially to Roam the Restored Rails through the Hampshire Countryside/ex-Southern Territory.
That ex-Southern Railway passenger carriage deserves to be preserved, It’s one of many important parts of British Railway History, let alone one of the sorts of carriages that have long been replaced by modern coaching stock out on the UK Rail-Network.
This Passenger Carriage is so Well-Restored, It even looks to be full of character as it’s intrinsically colorful livery lets on all-round.
