The series of books that make up In Memory cover the memories that author C. David Wilson has of being a footplateman back in the final years of steam on British Railways.
With photos on every page of the book, they show a wide variety of locomotives in action from the present-day heritage railways and mainline tours. A handful of old photographs do also feature though the book.
In Memory – Part 1 has just two sections, an introduction, and the main body of the book describing his life progressing from a Grammar School boy to working on sheds in Leeds – Farnley Junction. This is no longer a shed on the network, so it is great to read about what life was like back in the operational days.
It was nice to see a variety of heritage railways featured in this book, including the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the Foxfield Railway. These photos match with a locomotive that David Wilson worked on, or saw on shed while working.
Each page has a large photo covering around half the page, with a caption and we found the information and images worked well together and split up the detailed insight into the working life a BR footplatemen.
This book then is a superb collection of photos and memories by C. David Wilson and is an excellent insight for ‘youngsters’ who didn’t get chance to see what railways were like during the steam days.
Whether you want to see photos from railways around the country, or just read about the steam days, then this is a good addition to your bookshelf.
Plus with the e-book version costing less than the price of a coffee, the book is at a price accessible to all.
