TKh 2871's Boiler // Credit Batt Holden Ltd

Batt Holden Limited has released an update on the work they have been undertaking at their base of Cheddleton Locomotive Works on the Churnet Valley Railway.

LMS 8F No.48173

Restoration on 48173 is progressing well. The team have attached the new rear drag box to the mainframe and painted the drag box.

Reassembling the reverser components is in progress, the reverser shaft has been restored and refitted, with reverser parts located in the cab now shot-blasted they are ready to receive any work needed.

The new sandboxes await painting, and the new smokebox tubeplate is ready for welding following completion of a jig.

USATC S160 No.5197

Winter Maintenance on 5197 is progressing well, with minor work being completed. While carrying out the valve and piston examination, attention will also be turned to a leak coming from one of the rear cylinder covers and the coupled wheels' axleboxes and horns.

On top of these jobs, the team have been trying to improve the cab, tender locker and draughting by adjusting the blastpipe.

New superheater elements have been made and will be stored ready for fitting when one of the S160s needs a new set.

and No.2944

2871‘s boiler overhaul is progressing well, with welding of the outer firebox side sheets and fitting the doorplate and throatplate's new rivets completed.

Once finished, the boiler will be used on classmate No.2944 to reduce its overhaul time.

2944 is undergoing Winter Maintenance, where the team will carry out both maintenance and repairs needed to help 2944 operate in the 2020 season with minimum downtime as possible.

USATC S160 No.6046

Once work on 5197 is finished and the engine is moved out of the workshop, 6046 will enter for Winter Maintenance.
