Network Rail has announced that they are to become an accredited Real Living Wage employer.
The Real Living Wage is already paid by Network Rail to its 41,000 staff and becoming officially accredited means that all their contractors (who supply services such as cleaning and catering) will also be expected to pay the living wage.
They expect to become officially accredited in April 2020 after agreeing in principle to becoming an accredited Real Living Wage employer back in 2018.
The Living Wage Foundation has researched into the benefits for employers of the living wage and has found it reduced absenteeism, improved recruitment and retention of staff and improved worker morale.
What did the officials say?
Andrew Haines, Network Rail chief executive, said:
“We already pay our 41,000 employees the Real Living Wage and have been working closely with our contractors to ensure this is extended to our supply chain too.
“It is vital that we recognise the important work carried out by thousands of colleagues – day in and day out – helping to keep our stations clean and improve the journeys of millions of passengers every day.”
