The Mid Hants Railway has announced that it has appointed a new General Manager to take the railway forward.

With effect from today, long-term volunteer, Simon Baggott, has taken on the role of General Manager.

Simon has a background in engineering and marketing of engineering services at senior management level.

Simon has had a love for railways and has 30 years volunteering experience in heritage railways. He first volunteered at the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway where he completed a range of duties from Fireman to Signal Engineer.

Since 1998 Simon has been a volunteer on the Mid Hants Railway. Firstly, he assisted with locomotive overhauls before training on the footplate.

Simon has been a driver since 2007 and has undertaken the role of locomotive inspector, setting up improvement classes for firemen and drivers, and has served as a director for a number of years.

After a spell away from Director duties, Simon rejoined the board and with a fellow volunteer has been covering aspects of the General Manager’s role as an interim measure whilst the search for a new General Manager was underway.

What did the officials say?

Richard Lacey, Chairman of Mid Hants Railway said:

“The MHR Board made the appointment after a competitive, lengthy and rigorous process that produced a strong field from which Simon was the stand-out candidate. The Board considers that the Line is fortunate to have someone of Simon’s experience and knowledge of its workings taking the helm at an important point in its history to help drive the business forward.”
