Class 44 ‘Peak’ locomotive announced as guest for NVR’s Autumn Diesel Gala

The Nene Valley Railway (NVR) has announced that Class 44 ‘Peak' No.D4 (44004) “Great Gable” will be joining the line's Autumn Diesel Gala guest list.

About NVR's Autumn Diesel Gala

Taking place between Friday 9th to Sunday 11th of October 2020, “Great Gable” joins NVR home fleet and classmate No.45041, leading to NVR coining the gala as their “Twin Peak” gala.

Other guests will be confirmed in the run-up to the gala, with other home fleet engines joining the lineup, which are Class 14s No. 9529 & No. 9520, Tasc No. DR98500 and Swedish Railcar No. 1212.

History of 44004 “Great Gable”

Class 44 No. 44004 was built in September 1959 are part of the Peak class of locomotives, these are Class 44s, Class 45s and Class 46s. It was built at British Railway's Derby Works. In total, 10 Class 44s were built and were partly inspired by the LMS 10000 and 10001 prototypes.

44004 was in service right up until November 1980, when it was withdrawn. 44004 is now preserved with The Peak Locomotive Company and resides at the Midland Railway – Butterley.
