The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has launched a Crisis Fund after it chose to close the railway due to coronavirus.
There have been no reported cases of Coronavirus (Covid-19) at the NYMR, but the decision was made on the 18th March 2020 to delay the opening of the 2020 season until further notice.
Due to this decision, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway now needs your help. Without operating, this has a substantial impact on the future of the railway.
By donating, you help give the railway a fighting chance to carrying on steaming in the future once the pandemic is over.
Here is why the North Yorkshire Moors Railway needs your help:
- The NYMR can't claim insurance compensation for business interruption.
- The government has not offered monetary aid to charities yet.
- The only government help currently available would put the railway into significant debt
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has said it could lose up to £1m over the coming weeks. Figures like this could threaten the railway's future – donations are needed to make sure that they survive the pandemic.

Now Severn Valley Railway launches appeal. I would think a coordinated response is required. Otherwise how can you decide who to help or who not to help. National fund would be better and fairer.
Can’t cover the overheads without the income? You need more volunteers. This crisis will probably end several preservation societies who have lots of paid members of staff. Then again, there probably are an unsustainable number of railways around the country. Maybe this will weed out the least sustainable. (NB. I don’t want these railways to fold but think it’s inevitable)
