The Severn Valley Railway has announced that Austerity No. 71516/7170 ‘Welsh Guardsman' has arrived at Bridgnorth MPD.

The locomotive has arrived at Bridgnorth after leaving the Gwili Steam Railway this week.

The has agreed to host the locomotive whilst the owner decides on what to do with the locomotive for the 2020 season.

Bridgnorth Locomotive Works will complete examination and maintenance work. The locomotive will potentially be used on SVR services too, though this is not confirmed yet.

Welsh Guardsman is the first Austerity tank to visit the SVR since 30 January 1981 when former resident WD193 left for Hereford.

  • The Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust based at Midsomer Norton South would be a great place to run the loco throughout the summer……..?!!

  • If this is Austerity ‘193’ it’s very appropriate during the ‘Valley’s 50th year of preservation celebrations – particularly at the northern end of the line, although I travelled behind it to and from Bewdley / Bridgnorth ‘about forty-eight years ago’!
