A prototype Saint was built in 1902 and was used for stopping and express passenger services on the Great Western. They made the basis for the Hall class when 2925 St Martin was rebuilt in 1924. They lasted until 1951 when the class were withdrawn in 1951. Fast forward to the 21st Century – the Didcot Railway Centre started the new-build locomotive in 2009, and the completed 2999 steamed in passenger service in 2019.

What did the officials say?

SVR Gala Chairman Brian Malyon, said:

“We are absolutely thrilled to be bringing Lady of Legend to the SVR and are sure that it will really draw the crowds, just as ‘new' locomotive Tornado has done during its very popular visits to the Railway.

“It is a very fitting gala visitor during the SVR's 50th year in preservation, reflecting a celebration of our past heritage as well as the skills, dedication and technologies of today which are helping us to look firmly to the future.”

  • Great news – will enable “Lady of Legend” to stretch her legs on the SVR, and enable a wider audience of people to view and appreciate the work of dedicated restorers of this long-extinct but happily now re-created class of GWR engineering excellence!

    • Would be better on the Great Central, where she could REALLY stretch her legs. Will be good to see her at Kiddy though.
