The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has announced that they will be completing a full investigation after the derailment of a freight train near Wanstead Park and Walthamstow.
At around 06:00 on Thursday 23 January 2020, a freight train travelling from Barking to Calvert derailed on a bridge near Wanstead Park station.
The train, hauled by a DB Cargo class 66 locomotive, had 22 wagons carrying construction soil on board.
Once the derailment had taken place, the train travelled for 2.5 miles before the braking system indicated a problem to the driver.
The train was stopped between Leyton Midland Road and Walthamstow Queens Road stations with one wheelset on the 16th wagon derailed.
The freight train derailment resulted in significant damage to the track, infrastructure and the wagon.
The investigation will identify the events which led to the accident. It will include consideration of:
- the condition, inspection and maintenance of the track, including the longitudinal bridge timbers supporting the rails
- wagon condition, inspection, maintenance and loading
- any underlying factors
The RAIB will produce its findings at a later date.
