It has been confirmed that an accident involving a steam train in the Lake District and a DPD delivery van has occurred on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway.
The 12.30 from Dalegarth to Ravenglass, on the 15 inch-gauge railway, was involved in a collision with the DPD van at Eskdale Green level crossing.
No passengers, staff or members of the public were injured in the incident. However, as per standard procedure, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch has been informed.
The locomotive, River Esk, was not derailed and has now returned to Ravenglass with its train.

The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway said:
The 12.30 from Dalegarth was involved in an incident at Eskdale Green level crossing.
There were no injuries to passengers, staff or members of the public.
There will be no further comment until investigations are completed.

Pleased to report that R Esk only suffered very minor/insignificant damage, broken isolation valve on the front train brake pipe, and a few scratches on the front right running boards. It’s still in dock but that’s for other work not related in any way to this incident. I understand DPD accepted responsibility and the driver suitably reprimanded.

It was announced on local radio in Cumbria this morning that the RAIB inquiry was complete and that they would not be taking further action.
DPD driver not looking or taking care,have followed these nutters in Hull and on more than one occasion took s chance at Chalk lane crossing
Well having seen what nutters courier van drivers are – this is no suprise !!! The signs and safety precautions are absolutely fine – for those who abide by them. The van driver probably had his earphones in , texting and on the phone whilst driving come fourth !!!! Just sayin’

I hope riverEsk gets repaired I bet it had some bad damage.

Given the sighting restrictions (from road to railway), I think the Give Way signs should be replaced by STOP. But we’ll see what the RAIB has to say; not enough info here to draw conclusions.

The driver should have checked the line was clear before proceeding onto the crossing. The clue is the steam plume from the locomotive

What ‘steam plume’? The slight whiff of steam is from the safety valves which is perfectly normal when a loco is stationary for an extended time period

The precautions in the picture SHOULD be adequate, but experience suggests that RHDR type barriers nay become necessary. How common are near misses on the R&ER? The enquiry report will be informative.

That Level Crossing could be ungraded and be made safer, so’s to avoid a repeat.
My heart goes out to those of the R&ER, on the unexpected accident/incident.
