Vital rail upgrades to take place this weekend in Essex

has announced that vital rail upgrades will be carried out between Ipswich and , in Essex, this Sunday.

The work, taking place on Sunday 9 February will improve the reliability of train services in the region.

The following work will be carried out:

  • Track maintenance work at Colchester
  • Overhead wire renewals between Witham and Marks Tey
  • Work to the signalling systems at Colchester
  • Vegetation clearance

The work means fewer track and signalling issues that have been causing delays for Greater Anglia passengers.

Rail replacement services will run between Witham to Braintree, Sudbury to Marks Tey, Harwich to Manningtree and between Ipswich and Ingatestone.

Train information for Sunday 9 February

  • Train services will run between Chelmsford and London Liverpool Street.
  • Rail replacement services will be in place between:
    • Witham to Braintree
    • Ipswich to Ingatestone
    • Sudbury to Marks Tey
    • Harwich to Manningtree
    • Bury St Edmunds

Work will take place between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds on the Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 February. A rail replacement service will be in operation.

What did the officials say?

Ellie Burrows, Network Rail's managing director, Anglia, said:

“The main line is used by hundreds of trains every day which causes wear on the track and equipment. This package of upgrades and maintenance is vital to keep our passengers moving and reduce the number of delays. We've planned this for Sunday when fewer people use the railway.”

Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director, said:

“We're very sorry for the inconvenience engineering work causes but we will make sure customers can still complete their journeys, even if part of it is by train.

“We have a very busy railway and it's vitally important that Network Rail keeps on top of maintenance, so that we can provide a punctual and reliable service for our customers.”

  • And with ongoing overhead wiring renewals on the Southend Victoria line that needs to addressing. Especially when it’s not far from completion. And Network Rail needs to replace the overhead wires at Stratford at some stage.
