has released another update on the progress being made on building steam locomotive 72010 Hengist.

The drawings for the bogie castings are now complete with the production of the machining drawing for the bogie stretcher casting is now also complete.

The Clan Project has had a delivery date of early February for the casting to arrive at CTL Seal.

The commode handles – yes you read the right (called this on the BR drawings) – have been welded on the front tender steps.

No time was wasted as immediately after the steps went onto the shelves, a coat of primer was applied to the handles and the welded area.

Hengist has a forward sander on each of the driving wheels. Additionally, the centre driving wheel has a rear-facing sander. These sanders require sandpipe stays. These stays are bolted to the sides of the spring hanger feet. Adjustable slots need to be drilled to receive the sandpipe carrier.

A locking plate with a serrated edge also needs to be welded to the stays – this and the slots allows the vertical position of the sandpipe carrier to be adjusted.

Ashley has finished painting the cab roof ventilators. The group have, therefore, put them in place to stop the rain coming in. Flush fasteners will replace the ordinary bolts at a later date.

The casting of the bogie stretcher is progressing well. It has passed Ultrasonic and Magnetic Particle Inspection Testing and is now in the final inspection.

We are looking forward to seeing where 72010 Hengist ends up in 2020. We will update you further when more information is available on the steam locomotive.
