Network Rail has released updated proposals today for a series of potential changes to the section of the railway line in South Devon that runs through cliffs and past the sea.
Views are also being sought from communities and residents and also rail passengers that use the South West railway as part of a second consultation which will run for 6 weeks until the 1st March 2020 as they look to protect 1.8km of railway between Parsons Tunnel, near Holcombe and Teignmouth.
The railway line is the only line which connects Cornwall and Devon with the rest of the country and the plans would see the railway realigned away from the cliffs.
The updated design means that most of the beach is kept as it only moves the railway away from the hazardous areas of cliffs and keeps the existing railway line at Parsons Tunnel and at Teignmouth.
Further, a landward footpath will also be created with the new enhanced coastal path with more than 1km of new path.
The vulnerable section of railway was closed for six weeks following a landslide in 2014 and it needs better protection from cliff falls during extreme weather.

Starting today in Dawlish Warren, 11 consultation events will enable people to find out more about the plans.
What did the officials say?
Mike Gallop, route director for Network Rail's Western route, said:
“We have listened to feedback from the first round of consultation and our updated plans will ensure a resilient railway line for the whole south west while maintaining most of the beach and adding improved walking and leisure facilities.
“The railway is a vital artery to the South West, which communities, businesses and visitors to the region depend on for connecting with the rest of the UK. We welcome views on our updated proposals before we apply for consent to undertake the work.”

With the prosperity of the former railway line to be upgraded as a public bridleway and footpath. When the new railway line is to move away from the sea and a new railway station to serve Dawlish Warren and Dawlish Town. Not a bad idea. Hope it gets the approval.
