Just after 6 am this morning, Thursday 23rd January, a freight wagon derailed between Leyton Midland Road and Queens Road on the Gospel Oak to Barking line.

This resulted in delays and cancellations to London Overground services this morning.

Extensive damage has been caused to the track (2 miles of it!). This will need replacing before normal service can resume.

The cause of the derailment is being investigated.

's initial assessment has found the repairs will take a number of days to complete, however, further examination is required to find out the full extent of the damage.

There is currently no London Overground service between Barking and South Tottenham while engineers assess the damage caused by the derailment.

There is expected to be continuing disruption on the rest of the line for several days. Passengers wishing to travel between Walthamstow Central and Barking are advised to continue to check the TfL Journey Planner before travelling.

A rail replacement bus service has been provided between Walthamstow Central and Barking calling at Leyton Midland Road, Leytonstone High Road (Harrow Green), Wanstead Park and Woodgrange Park to allow passengers to complete their journey.

  • 2 miles? Assume it was a class66, but surely even with the power available the driver should have noticed the effect of extra drag caused by derailed wagon(s) on train speed. Was it aggregates or a Freightliner? Details welcome.
