Just in time for rugby fans, a brand-new railway station has opened today at Twickenham. The new station will provide 5.5 million passengers with a better experience when travelling to the new bigger station.
The 2020 Guinness Six Nations Championship begins soon, and England will be playing their first matches at home since reaching the Rugby World Cup Final.
The new Twickenham Railway Station design has step-free access to all the platforms and more space for passengers.
There are 250 cycle spaces and an enhanced queueing system for match days at Twickenham.
Part of the Twickenham Gateway project the new station is a joint venture between Network Rail and Kier Property. It includes a public plaza, half the size of the rugby pitch. Phase 2 will see 6 retail units and over 100 new homes built by early 2021.
What did the officials say?
Tim Shaw, Head of Solum, said:
“The opening of the new Twickenham station is the culmination of years of hard work and is the first step in our multi-million pound plans to transform the station, which will deliver new homes, a public plaza and shops. We would like to thank passengers and residents once again for their patience as we have undertaken these critical improvement works which will radically transform journeys.”
Mark Killick, Network Rail Wessex route director, said:
“We are proud of the transformation of Twickenham station, which will improve the travel experience for passengers on a daily basis and reduce congestion for rugby and music fans when the railway service supports these large events.
“The development will also help to transform the surrounding community, and this collaborative programme shows how the rail industry can work together with external partners to fund and deliver rail upgrades that will not only benefit passengers but also benefit the communities where they live through regeneration of the station area.”
Mark Hopwood, South Western Railway's Managing Director, said:
“For our 5.5m passengers who use the station every year, I'm sure they'll be delighted that the old, cramped station has been replaced by a new, modern much bigger station.
“A larger ticket hall, more cycle bays, and new lifts improving accessibility for everyone, transforms the everyday travelling experience for millions of our passengers commuting to work, as well as for fans attending special events and matchdays at Twickenham stadium. “We'd like to thank our passengers for their patience during the station's construction.”

And near the end of 2023 we’re still waiting for those shops. Solum did NOTHING to the station except build a big new entrance hall, and guess what, it still can’t cope with rugby crowds. As for the ‘radically transformed journeys,’ we’re still waiting for those, as well. Perhaps no-one told South Western they need to do their bit. Sending the staff to charm school would be a start.
Wasn’t there supposed to be a river walkway as well, or did someone finally realise the South Bank wouldn’t fit along the River Crane? So much for developers’ ‘promises.’

No station platforms indicated on the tiny notice board for the station, which you have to look for..its over to the right as you enter! you have to find somebody to ask in the ugly forecourt, why isnt there a HUGE notice board FACING YOU as you enter giving instant information..AND PLATFORM NUMBERS…all those millions and it is not fit for purpose, how sad, was it just built so that Solum could profit from the flats because it is useless as a station so far, am very disappointed..and only a small sandwich shop..I thought a small local supermarket would have been better!
