  • As much as Northern Rail is receiving vitriolic criticism for its performance, I do have some sympathy with them regarding the factors outside of their control, which have affected their ability to fulfill their contractual obligations. Whoever takes over the franchise will be constrained by the same issues & I cannot see anyone willing to take on the business under these circumstances. HS2 is looking increasingly expensive as the estimated cost has now, according to some, doubled. I am tempted to suggest this massive budget would be better spent in the North to assist in its regeneration. But, hey, what do I know about it all? Maybe because I don’t see HS2 as my personal vanity project I just might be making more sense than I think I am making? A.Citizen (Anywhere Town)
