, who are building BR ‘Clan' No. 72010 ‘Hengist', has released an update on their project to build the locomotive from scratch.

The group has spent a significant amount of time over the last few weeks measuring and checking the locomotive frames. In particular, the group has been thoroughly checking the horn guides to make sure that they have enough materials to machine.

They have now agreed with CTL Seal that the alignment was good and the drilling and bolting of the frame plates could begin.

First, a magnetic base drill is clamped to the frame plates. Next, the team drill out to the correct size and is then reamed out. Finally, a small chamfer is applied to the hole with a  countersink to ensure that the bolt sits firmly on the frame plate.

The intention at this moment in time is to fit enough bolts to lock the alignment before hornguide machining. Most bolts will be then fitted after machining.

Parts for the bogie have continued to arrive into stock, these are the 2 bogie stays that fit at the front and rear of the frame.

The stays were manufactured some time ago, however, they have only recently been returned from being machined.

The Clan Project has been told that the bogie stretcher, centre slide and axle box guide castings will be delivered in early February 2020. The team are now making the machining drawings so that they can go straight into the machining shop.

2 wear plates are now back from the manufacturers, these sit between the bogie centre bar and the stretcher casting. The large bolts are used to fasten the V Plates that sit before and after the centre slide and retain it in place.

More of the smaller parts are being made.

All of this is showing great progress for the locomotive, and means the group is heading in the right direction towards completion of the locomotive.
