It has been announced that Ex-LNER No. 60009 ‘Union of South Africa’ has now been stabled at Wolverton Works.
Wolverton Works is just north of Milton Keynes, and the last steam locomotives believed to use this facility was 71000 and 70000 back in 1985!
The support crew for the A4 pacific are now preparing the tender and locomotive for splitting at Wolverton.
This will then allow the tender to leave the locomotive to be shipped back to Ian Riley’s in Bury to be repaired.
The tender is due to be travelling back to Bury on Monday.
These repairs are going to be carried out as soon as possible, but it is currently unknown how long this will take.
It has also not been confirmed yet whether 60009 and her support coach are staying at Wolverton or are making the trip north with the tender.
This is a big blow for the A4, which is counting down the months towards withdrawal, but we look forward to seeing the locomotive in action really soon.
