It has been confirmed that Great Western Railway ‘King’ No. 6024 ‘King Edward I’ has had its boiler pass its formal Hydraulic Test.
The first fire since 2012 was lit on Sunday 3rd November. The steam test followed on Tuesday, November 5th 2019.
On Tuesday 5th November, 6024’s boiler was subject to its official “in steam” boiler exam with the group’s insurance inspector assessing the overhauled boiler. Also in attendance were 6024 Preservation Society officers and Riley & Sons (E) Ltd staff.
The safety valves were initially set well below the normal 250psi, being raised in stages.
As expected, the process highlighted a few areas that need work. However, it is pleasing to see that this was just minor work to be completed.
The boiler was tested in the East Lancashire Railway yard at Baron Street, Bury, and has now returned to Riley’s works in Heywood for final painting. The ashpan will also be trial fitted whilst ‘up north’.
It is planned to return the boiler to the locomotives chassis on the same day it arrives.
