The has released an update on the overhaul of Southern Railway ‘Battle of Britain' Class No.34059 “Sir Archibald Sinclair”.

Chassis

Removal of many parts has been carried out, including the coupling rods, crosshead guides, cylinder cladding, brake gearing, running plates, pipework and the four lubricators.

These components will be cleaned, repaired and painted where necessary.

Once the frame has been lifted off the coupled wheels, bogie and trailing truck. This will allow the axleboxes, wheels and frames, to name the major parts, to be cleaned and examined to assess their condition and work needed.

Boiler

The firebox is currently being fitted with the 2200 stays it requires. Areas which experience high stress will receive monel metal stays.

These stays are formed from an alloy metal which is resistant to corrosion. The monel stays cost roughly four times as steel ones, being £45 for monel and £11 for steel.
