One-third of brand new trains are now in service for Northern – getting passengers to where they need to be in more comfort than ever before.
The £500m investment in 101 brand new trains is well on track with 33 of the Class 195 and Class 331 trains operating on a number of routes.
The new trains feature free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, at-seat power and customer information/media screens with real-time information.
Towards the end of the year, Northern is set to introduce more new trains in locations including Bolton, Blackburn, York, Sheffield, Barnsley, Lincoln and Nottingham.
What did the officials say?
David Brown, Northern's Managing Director, said:
“The Northern network is busier than it has been for a generation – more than 100 million customer journeys will be made on Northern services in 2019 – and the introduction of new trains is at the heart of our transformation for customers.
“We are delighted, therefore, that even more customers travelling across the north are now served by brand new trains –more than one million customer journeys have already been made on the new trains.”
“These fantastic trains are a true step-change in travelling experience and we are extremely proud to be delivering a £500m investment.
“Today we are really pleased to have 33 brand new trains carrying customers, with more to come throughout 2019 and into 2020.”

Dont matter as they are never on time or cancelled. New trains or not, still a crap company!
Trouble is these new trains are hopelessly inadequate, 2 & 3 car units in the case of the 195’s when to make a real difference they need to be 4 or 5 car.
They’re also not great quality, the ride is pretty awful and seat alignment with the windows in the middle third is poor. Seats themselves the now standard ironing boards. Not a step change from 158s and being far better than a pacer is hardly a high bar.
The ride can be sorted and the seats swapped / moved of course, but all in all I think they’re a huge missed opportunity. Northern need to order lots more centre cars to make it really worthwhile.
Not one on the Ormskirk Preston route either. Lucky if you see a train at all!
Once again all the investment in new trains goes everywhere except the North East. No mention here of Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Bishop Auckland… I’ve heard the drivers here are only trained to drive Pacers and Sprinters so I guess we’ll just be getting more of the usual cast off rolling stock left over on the network that’s a bit better than a Pacer but ultimately still 30 years old and a bit crap
But is Northern not allowing new Class 195 trains to operate in the Northeast including Middlesbrough, Darlington, Newcastle, Redcar, Sunderland, Hartlepool and other destinations that mostly be operated with Sprinter DMUs and of course Class 142 Pacers. At least TransPennine Express will be able to serve the Northeast with the Nova 1 Class 802 IETs set to enter service from next year.
