The , caretakers of the sole surviving London & North Western Railway Coal Tank, No. 1054, have announced her final day in steam before overhaul will be Sunday 3rd November 2019.

In a statement released on their Facebook page (which you can read here), the Society explained this was due to three main reasons:

  1. The Coal Tank is nearing the end of its present boiler certificate.
  2. Leaks were discovered in the boiler tubes earlier in the year, highlighting the need for major boiler work.
  3. They want the locomotive in running order again by 2022 and expect the overhaul to take up to 2 years to complete, so need to start work now in order to meet this deadline.

They also explained that as the only operation LNWR locomotive at the moment, they are expecting the locomotive to play a large part in the centenary celebrations of the merging of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway and the London & North Western Railway in 2022.

Continuing on, the locomotive will be steamed for the final time on this boiler ticket on Sunday 3rd November, as a farewell occasion for the loco.

This event will be attended by several invited guests, including members from the National Trust, owners of the locomotive, and members of the LNWR Society.

They also stated that any members of the public that wish to attend are welcome to do so too, and the locomotive will be in Ingrow Yard for the day.
