Construction of South Shields’ new £21million transport interchange has been filmed in a three-minute timelapse video.
Timelapse footage shows the statement building from the start of the build through to completion earlier this month.
The interchange, which forms Phase Two of the £100 million 365 town centre regeneration masterplan, is now open to the public.
The footage starts following ground preparation works and demolition of the old post office on Keppel Street.
Viewers see the steel skeleton of the building being erected and a large brick retaining wall being constructed to separate the building from the car park.
In the background, work is ongoing to upgrade track and signaling systems as well as building a new platform for the Metro.
The roof is installed, followed by the external shell of the building, finished with gold-coloured copper shingle cladding.
Finally, the bus concourse is constructed and finishing touches are added to the building.
Around 7.5 million passengers a year are expected to use the interchange, which brings a relocated Metro station and bus concourse under one roof.
What did the officials say?
Cllr Mark Walsh, Lead Member for Housing and Transport on South Tyneside Council, said:
“The site has been a hive of activity since April last year and we’ve all watched this building gradually take shape before our eyes.
“Now we can see the product of that hard work and what a striking, fantastic addition to the town centre the interchange is.
“Seeing the construction process captured from start to finish in this video is fascinating. The interchange is already becoming part of the fabric of the town so it’s great to look back at this footage with a sense of achievement.”
