has announced that two-thirds of its trains have now been through initial refurbishments.

Alongside the introduction of 101 brand-new trains, at a cost of £500m, Northern is investing a further £80m in refurbishing the remainder of its fleet.

A mixture of diesel and electric trains are operating across the Northern network and 243 trains are being refurbished to an ‘as new' standard.

All trains will, when the full refurbishment programme is complete, be made comfier, cleaner and completely modernised.

The 400 plus carriages will also have replacement seats and energy efficient LED lightning.

The refurbishment of Northern's fleet is taking place at depots in Doncaster, Crewe, Wolverton, Loughborough and Kilmarnock in Scotland.

What did the officials say?

David Brown, Northern's Managing Director, said:

“A lot of our focus has been on the introduction of brand-new trains, but I am also delighted with the significant progress we are making in modernising the rest of our fleet.

“When we started our franchise in 2016 we made the commitment to totally transform customers' travelling experience with us. We are making every train in our fleet modern and accessible for all and have completed two thirds of the initial stage of the fleet renewal. I am delighted that customers across the north of England are now starting to travel on much-improved trains with better on-board facilities.”

continue to police our streets and keep them as safe as we can.

“As part of Operation Sceptre we have been doing a range of work across the Force area from weapons sweeps to educational events. Our officers did a fantastic job engaging with the public at North Shields Metro and there was a lot of support of our usage of knife wands and the arch scanner. We want the public to know we are committed to working with our partners to keep transport our transport hubs safe.

“While our officers didn't recover any items, it is important we keep engaging with the public and patrolling public spaces to show the public we will not tolerate knife crime on our streets.

“Operation Sceptre is a great way for us to show our communities – during a week of intensification – the relentless work we do as part of our drive to reduce the impact of knife crime here in the North East alongside our partners.”

  • No details..just which units are being refurbished (or “refreshed”)? Why are companies so coy about details?
    Love the nitty-gritty!

  • But why is Northern ignoring the Northeast as passengers want new trains on their doorstep but instead they be dealing with trains that gets packed and breaks down.
