The has announced that it has introduced a new ticket, the Railway Rambler.

The new ticket is to encourage people to take a single journey by heritage bus and train to Ongar and then to return by walking the 7.5-mile section of the Essex Way walkway.

On, Saturday, Alison Stewart-Paterson and her family bought the first Railway Rambler tickets and caught the bus from outside of Epping Tube station on their way to Ongar.

The round trip took the family a leisurely 5 hours, stopping at two pubs, spotting wildlife and farm animals and taking in the scenery to get back to Epping.

The Railway Rambler ticket is £7 for adults and £3.50 for children and offers a single journey from Epping to Ongar via heritage bus and train services on the first bus and train of the day.

What did the officials say?

Alison said

“We saw the offer in an email earlier in the week and thought the walk would be a great way of extending the summer for us.  The boys loved spotting wildlife, looking at bugs and were delighted to be so close to the horses and sheep. It was a perfect family day out of London.”

“The route was clearly mapped out and easy to follow, and we loved the magic of the forest! Once we reached Epping station we were tired out but had a great sense of achievement!”

Dean Walton, the Railway's General Manager, said,

“I was delighted to meet Alison and her family at the start of their Railway Ramble. This new ticket is opening up Ongar and the surrounding countryside for daytrippers from London in a win-win for the local economy and the Railway. I was so pleased when she told me what a lovely day the family had had.”

“Until 1994 the Central Line ran all the way to Ongar, now the line has been put to use as a heritage tourist attraction bringing much needed visitors to Ongar. Making it easy to come by public transport puts less pressure on the roads and car parks in and around Ongar as well getting families and children active.”
