Steam locomotive celebrates the reopening of the Conwy Valley line this weekend

Two steam locomotives will be heading to the Conwy Valley line this Saturday, 3 August.

To celebrate the reopening of the Conwy Valley line, and Rail Services are hosting a special steam train trip.

The line, which was closed in March due to extensive flooding, fully reopened to the public last week.

The train, hauled by double headed steam locos 48151 and 45690 Leander, will run from Chester to Blaenau Ffestiniog, also stopping at Llandudno Junction on the way.

Return tickets are available to buy for only £75 return. To book tickets call 0844 856 0688 (opening times Mon – Fri 0830-1630).

Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways has arranged an additional trip for passengers to continue their journey from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Tan-y-Bwlch on the historical narrow gauge railway. The train will depart Blaenau Ffestiniog at 13:10, returning at 15:45. Return tickets will be available to purchase for £15 on the day.

What did the officials say?

Bill Kelly, route director, Network Rail Wales and Borders, said:

“After months of hard work to repair the flood-damaged Conwy Valley line, we are delighted to have reopened it in time for the National Eisteddfod and to be celebrating with a special steam train trip for passengers to discover and explore the beauty of this line.”

Colin Lea, customer experience director for Transport for Wales Rail Services said:

“This is a rare opportunity to travel by steam through some of the best scenery in the UK, celebrating the return of the Conwy Valley line – it will be a trip to remember.”

Cllr Philip C Evans, chair of the Conwy Valley Railway Partnership, said:

“It is wonderful news that Network Rail are marking the reopening of the line in such a special way which will also mark the beginning of the Eisteddfod in Llanrwst.”
