The North British Locomotive Preservation Group have released an update on steam locomotive 61662 Manchester United.

Working parties on the locomotive have been sparse due to the holidays during July.

However, the fourth boiler former has been fitted ready for the final two sections of cladding to be lifted into place.

The first of six boiler bands have been cut to shape and fitted to the firebox next to the cab.

The group have thanked the people from Mizens for putting in a great deal of hard work to tidy up the area around the locomotive in July.

A new 30A Stratford shed plate and an LNER style 9×5 style builders plate showing No 61662’s old number 2862 have been ordered from Newton Replicas and hopefully, they will be fitted during August.

  • Please do your homework before you comment Andrew. As a GWR-ophile, even I know that there was a whole class of locomotives named after football clubs.

  • So Manchester United FC have named a steam locomotive. Suppose it was nice for the football club to use their name on the steam locomotive.

  • The ‘Sandy’ looks lovely amid the trees, but would a canopy not be an advantage? However, all success to the working group, with 2 B1’s on main-line running nothing is impossible in restoration!
