A big milestone has been reached in the overhaul of the 's Southern Railway ‘Battle of Britain' Class engine with the start of the overhaul on the rolling chassis.

Rolling Chassis

As can be seen from the picture, the rolling chassis has been moved inside the workshop at Sheffield Park.

This will allow the teams from both the Bluebell Railway and The Bulleid Society to start removing parts and assessing the condition and work required to get 34059 back in steam again.

The full scale of the work needed will only be found once components are disassembled.

Boiler

Positioned in front of chassis, recent work has seen the start of drilling the pilot holes for the firebox. With over 2,200 holes to drill, tap and ream the task will take a while. The first batch of stays has been delivered to the Bluebell Railway ready for fitting.
