Two rail workers die after being struck by train in South Wales

The British Transport Police has announced that, sadly, two rail workers have died following a train v person incident.

The incident happened shortly before 10 am today (03/07). BTP officers were called to the railway near Port Talbot in South Wales, following reports of an incident.

Paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service arrived at the scene, but very sadly, two people were pronounced dead at the scene.

Update @11:50: A third person who was involved has been treated for shock at the scene, but was not injured otherwise.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has been notified.

At the time of writing, disruption is expected between Bridgend and Swansea until the end of the day.

Trains are currently unable to run between Bridgend and Swansea. Trains will be cancelled or delayed by up to 90 minutes.

Buses are operating between Cardiff Central and Swansea. Buses will also run from Carmarthen to Swansea / Cardiff.

Superintendent Andy Morgan from British Transport Police, said:

“We are making a number of urgent enquiries to understand exactly what happened in the moments leading to this fatal collision.

“Very sadly two people have died and my officers are now working to identify them and ensure that their families are supported at this incredibly difficult time.”

Stephen Kinnock, MP, tweeted:

I’m very concerned to see reports of the tragic accident on the rail line between Bridgend and Port Talbot. I understand that there may have been two fatalities. This is awful news, and my thoughts are with the families of all concerned.’
