On Wednesday 3rd July 2019, shortly after 10:00, emergency services were called to a location close to Port Talbot, South Wales, after reports from Network Rail that 1L48, the 0929 GWR service from Swansea to London Paddington had struck what the Driver believed to be three people.
It was later discovered that two members of the Port Talbot track team had tragically lost their lives as a result of the 1L48 striking them, with a third member of the team being treated for shock.
Network Rail and train operating companies plan to hold a minute of silence on Wednesday 10th July at 10:00, in memory of the two-track workers who lost their lives.
This tragic incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of how dangerous a place the railways can be, even to those that are trained to work on it. The thoughts of all the Rail Advent team go out to all of those involved in last Wednesday's tragic accident and to the families and friends of those who lost their lives.
What did the officials say?
Network Rail's Chief Executive, Andrew Haines, released a statement saying:
“Many of us are still reeling from the shock of the tragedy in South Wales yesterday when our colleagues, Gareth Delbridge and Michael Lewis died after being struck by a train. Gareth and Mike were extremely well respected and experienced members of the Port Talbot track team – together they have given over 84 years' service to the railway and they will be missed. Today I have been to South Wales to offer support to my colleagues, the families, as well as to the BTP and RAIB investigations.”

It’s a shame the two Railtrack workers from Port Talbot got killed by the train, I would like to do a 1 minute silence at 10am, I hope every body would a 1 minute silence for the Railtrack team.
Thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Such a dreadful accident. Very sad.
