The LMS-Patriot Company Board has announced that they have reached a decision as to who will complete ‘The Unknown Warrior’.

The successful bidder is the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust, who are based at West Shed at the Midland Railway – Butterley, in Derbyshire.

The PRCLT fought off completion from Riley & Sons and Railway Forgings & Castings.

The three bids received were excellent and the decision to award the contract to PRCLT was because they scored most highly on the criteria set by the project, which included Capacity, Continuity, Main Line Preparation and Operation, Volunteer Input, Capability, Resource, Inspection and Preparation, After Support, Warranties, Relationship, Culture and Safety.

The project has entered into a partnership with the Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust, who will supply manpower, technical management and support and will allow the project’s volunteers to assist wherever possible.

The final stage of the construction of ‘The Unknown Warrior’ is an assembly job, with most of the large components having been manufactured and delivered and already fitted.

The boiler is the final assembly job to be completed, with work continuing on this by HBSS.

How can I help?

To date, the project has raised in excess of £3 million, but they still need to raise funds to finish the locomotive, the tender, mainline running gear and purchase a support coach.
