Recent work at Embsay Locomotive Workshop has seen two engines take a step closer to running again.
“Beatrice”
The boiler for “Beatrice”, the line's Hunslet numbered 2705, has been craned back into its frame.
The boiler has been improved in preservation by fitting a rocking grate, hopper ashpan and a Lempor exhaust system, making the engine easier to ‘dispose' of after a days work along with better performance.
Running on the line since 1982, “Beatrice” is a popular and familiar engine with visitors.
“Wheldale”
While the crane was at the line, the opportunity was taken to remove the cab and water tanks from the frame. This will allow the team to further dismantle the locomotive in preparation for its ‘bottom-end' overhaul. Like 2705, “Wheldale” has been based on the line for a few decades, featuring in many advertising posters for the heritage railway.
Now owned by the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, the engine is undergoing an overhaul estimated to cost £200,000. A year ago the £100,000 mark was passed, allowing work to start. Want to help put the steam back in “Wheldale”? Please click here to donate.
