Pictures of Leeds railway station's new spectacular transparent roof have been released by Network Rail.
These behind the scenes images show what the maze of support towers positioned on the main station concourse is supporting. Above all the scaffolding a new ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE for short) roof, nicknamed the ‘top hat' is starting to take shape. The pictures released by Network Rail show the roof's new airy and modern design as well as how much higher it will be compared to the structure it is replacing.
The multi-million-pound project is part of the Leeds Integrated Station Masterplan; designed to revitalise and replace the old wooden roof, and improve the main gateline. Both of these projects are still on course to be completed in time for the UCI Road World Championship which is set to take place at the end of September. The project is designed to let more light into what is a dark station – making it a more pleasant area for passengers, as well as reduce congestion at the gateline – making travelling through the station much easier.
Work is also ongoing to improve the pedestrian area along New Station Street as well as the refurbishment of toilet facilities on the station. Both of these projects are also set to be completed on time.
During the final few months of the work, additional staff are set to be on hand to offer assistance to passengers.
Following the completion of the current projects, a new platform ‘0' will be opened in 2021 in a bid to improve reliability for passengers using the station.
What did the officials say?
Programme Manager for Network Rail, Mark Bloor, said
“We know that for the past six months passengers have been extremely patient while the concourse at Leeds has been full of towers, and I'm delighted that we can now show them why that's been the case and what we've been doing to improve their station.
“We're entering the last stretch of construction which will mean some short-term changes to access routes through the station, so we're asking passengers to bear with us and allow a little extra time to travel as we put the finishing touches a project that we hope will make a significant improvement to one of the main gateways to Leeds.”
